A royal square in red brick, a Jewish quarter of bakeries and falafel counters, and townhouse gardens behind the street doors. Weighing up Le Marais tours? These are the places a walk takes you.

The set opens on the Place des Vosges. One pavilion stands a story above its neighbors over the arcade, and the garden in the middle has its fountains, its lawns and its clipped lime trees. On a fine afternoon half of Paris seems to be lying on the grass.

Then the Jewish quarter. The Rue des Rosiers has its queue outside the falafel counters, and the shopfronts around it are painted yellow and blue, one with a menorah in the window. The Art Nouveau synagogue on the Rue Pavée is Hector Guimard's, finished in 1913. A few streets north, a street sign on the Rue des Archives is painted in rainbow colors.

Behind the street doors are the gardens. The garden behind the Hôtel de Sully runs back to its orangery, and a box-hedge parterre fills the courtyard of another townhouse. A banner on a stone wall marks the Musée Picasso. The set closes at the table, with bakers, cheese counters, wine and tarts.
