★★★★★ 4.9 (385 traveler reviews)

A full mealAll in the MaraisWine pouredMax 12 guests

A walk that feeds you lunch rather than a string of bites. You meet on the Ile Saint-Louis, cross into the Marais, and eat over at least four stops: macarons, falafel on the Rue des Rosiers, a sit-down main course near the Hôtel de Sully, and choux pastry on the Place des Vosges. At least one glass of wine comes with it. You finish in the square, full.

Twelve people at most, and at least two to a booking.

From the Ile Saint-Louis to the Place des Vosges

This walk starts on the island, not in the Marais, and that is part of its value. You meet at Place Louis Aragon on the tip of the Ile Saint-Louis. The first forty minutes stay there, with the first sweet thing of the day: macarons, the small round almond cakes. Then you cross the river into the Marais and wind through it, by the Rue des Rosiers and the Rue de Rivoli, until you reach the Place des Vosges.

That route gives you two quarters for one fare, and it ends in the one square everybody wants to see. It also means the walk runs the other way from the Saint-Paul food walks, which start in the middle of the Marais and head north. If you are comparing the two directly, the tastings walk from Saint-Paul costs the same $104 and covers more stops. Le Marais Paris Tours sets both beside every other fare.

What the meal covers

The fare buys a full meal spread over at least four stops, and the stops follow the order of a meal. The Rue des Rosiers brings falafel. A bistro near the Hôtel de Sully serves the main course, and you sit down for it. Travelers have been offered a choice that included a croque-monsieur and a beef bourguignon. Cheese and something sweet close the meal, and the Place des Vosges ends it with choux pastry.

The order can shift when a kitchen closes early, and one reviewer had the cheese after the dessert for that reason. Small plates come first, so the early stops can feel light; the main course is where the fare earns its word "meal". Anything beyond what is served, a second glass or a coffee, you pay for yourself.

Vegetarians yes, vegans no

Vegetarian options are offered, and you should ask for them when you book, not at the first stop. The walk is not suitable for vegans or for anyone who is lactose intolerant: cheese, cream and butter run through the whole menu. Guests with severe or life-threatening food allergies cannot take part at all, for safety reasons.

The wine rule is simple. The minimum drinking age is 18, and non-alcoholic options are there for anyone who wants them. Children aged 6 to 10 have their own fare, and the walk is stroller accessible. Families weighing it against the other options will find them on family-friendly Le Marais tours.

How the three and a half hours run

  1. Place Louis Aragon, Ile Saint-Louis. Meet your guide at the tip of the island, on the Quai de Bourbon.
  2. About 40 minutes on the island. The first tasting, and the streets of the Ile Saint-Louis.
  3. About 20 minutes on the Rue des Rosiers. Falafel in the heart of the Jewish quarter.
  4. About 40 minutes around the Rue de Rivoli. More tastings along the busiest street in the district.
  5. About 40 minutes at the Hôtel de Sully. The courtyard and garden, and the sit-down main course nearby.
  6. About 30 minutes on the Place des Vosges. Choux pastry to finish, in the oldest planned square in Paris.

Who this suits: you want lunch, and you want to sit down for it

Book this if

You want one guided tour to be your lunch, and you would rather sit for the main course than eat every bite in the street. It suits couples, parents with a teenager, and anyone who wants the Ile Saint-Louis and the Place des Vosges in the same afternoon. Vegetarians are catered for if you ask ahead.

Book something else if

You are vegan, lactose intolerant or have a severe allergy; this walk cannot take you. If you want more stops and more wine, the tastings walk from Saint-Paul is the same price. If you want the history without the meal, the Jewish quarter walk costs $64. And if a smaller group matters, the Eating Europe walk caps at nine. The history walks are on Le Marais walking tours.

Finding Place Louis Aragon

You meet at Place Louis Aragon, on the Quai de Bourbon, at the western tip of the Ile Saint-Louis. Use that written address. A reviewer on this walk found that the map pin in the booking app pointed somewhere else and made them late, so type the address into your own map app before you leave. Pont Marie on metro line 7 is the nearest station.

The walk ends on the Place des Vosges, although the end point can move slightly with the restaurants that are open. From there Saint-Paul metro on line 1 and Bastille are a short walk away. The start and finish of every walk in the quarter are marked on the Le Marais meeting-point map.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really a full meal?
Yes: the stops add up to a whole meal over at least four places, with a seated main course in the middle. The early stops are small plates, so it builds. Eat a light breakfast, not no breakfast.
What is the main course?
A bistro plate served near the Hôtel de Sully; travelers have been offered a choice including a croque-monsieur and a beef bourguignon. Vegetarian options are offered if you ask when you book. The menu can change with what the kitchen has that day.
Where exactly do we meet?
At Place Louis Aragon on the Quai de Bourbon, the western tip of the Ile Saint-Louis. Use the written address rather than the pin in the booking app. Pont Marie on line 7 is the nearest metro.
Can children come?
Yes. There is a fare for ages 6 to 10, and the route is stroller accessible. Children get non-alcoholic drinks, since the drinking age is 18.
Is there a smaller or more wine-led version?
The tastings walk from Saint-Paul pours more wine over more stops at the same price. For a smaller table, the Eating Europe walk caps at nine and seats you on the Place des Vosges. Both are compared on Le Marais food tours.
What if I need to cancel?
You get the full fare back if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. Inside those 24 hours the fare is not refunded. The walk needs two guests to a booking.
